ÖDG – Austrian Diabetes Society:
Research project on Diabetes and Covid-19
Research project on Diabetes and Covid-19
Quick capture of key patient data for the diabetes and Covid-19 research project with HybridForms: At nine hospitals and university clinics across Austria, pseudonymized data of diabetes patients undergoing inpatient treatment for Covid-19 disease are digitally collected on mobile devices using the HybridForms App.
HybridForms: Digital forms in medicine & research
For the clinical study, pseudonymized data are collected from patients who have diabetes and require hospital care with SARS-CoV2 infection. Basic data include, for example, patient ID, age, gender, diabetes type/duration, height, weight (with automatic calculation of BMI), abdominal girth, blood pressure, and pulse.
Medical staff also record other parameters such as laboratory values, concomitant diseases, medication, therapy and the course of disease on tablets and smartphones. Strict hygiene regulations can also be complied with, as all mobile devices can be wiped clean, and data is transferred to research partners quickly, »contactlessly« and securely via the Cloud.
Due to the multicentric execution of the project, a mix of different end devices and operating systems are in use – the HybridForms App enables seamless and cross-platform working for Android, iOS, Windows & Web browser.
About the ÖDG
The Austrian Diabetes Society (ÖDG – Österreichische Diabetes Gesellschaft) is the medical-scientific professional society of Austrian diabetes experts.
Full members of the Society are physicians and scientifically relevant academics. Associate members are diabetes advisors and dieticians.
The ÖDG‘s mission is to improve the health and quality of life of people with diabetes mellitus and it also supports research in the relevant fields.
About the project partners
Kapsch BusinessCom, Microsoft & icomedias / HybridForms support this research project and provide bundled know-how and innovative technology free of charge.
Kapsch BusinessCom received the award as »Microsoft Country Partner of the Year 2020« for this project.
»In the current Covid-19 situation, fast action is necessary. We are grateful to Kapsch and its partners for supporting us quickly and competently.«
»Since rapid implementation was of central importance for the project, we are pleased that Kapsch BusinessCom, together with its partners icomedias and Microsoft, took on the implementation of the electronic data capture tool and database without hesitation. The system was ready within a few days, so that the data collection could be started quickly with the arrival of the ethics committee votes.«

Requirements of the ÖDG – Austrian Diabetes Society
The coronavirus pandemic poses new challenges for many people. Diabetics are among the Covid-19 risk patients, as diabetes can lead to serious courses. The Austrian Diabetes Society (ÖDG) has therefore launched a research project in April 2020 to collect important information on diabetes mellitus and Covid-19 as part of a large-scale scientific study.
Since data collection for this cohort study was to be carried out across sites and throughout Austria, only an end-to-end digital form solution was considered from the outset in order to be able to ensure collaboration, communication and availability of the collected data securely and without loss of time.
